Zino Platinum Scepter Chubby Review

Today I received a box of Zino Platinum Scepter Chubby and tried one out of the box to find out the buzz behind these cigars. I paid $99 for a box of 12 which turns out to be $8.25 a stick. This cigar had a great appearance with a silky, oily wrapper which is made from Dominican filler tobacco with Connecticut shade binder.

Prelight:
This little chubby guy had a mellow sweet tobacco aroma which is pleasant. In the box most of the cigar foots look a little crushed and the wrapper was cracked. Not a big deal. I cut it wit my Xikar cutter and the draw was loose but not problematic.

First third:
It started with a mild tobacco taste and produced lots of white smoke. I did not find any complexity and did not pick any specific flavor except clean mild tobacco taste. One thing I really enjoyed was the finish which was a mile long and creamy. No bitter aftertaste which was wonderful but difinately a really mild cigar.

Second third:
It started to build some body which was nice as I like fuller body cigars. Finish was still pleasant and the ash was solid. It did not taste bitter at all.

Final third:
Draw became tighter and the reason was the cap was getting from puffing. It also started to become a little boring and I had to put it down.

Conclusion:
Overall I think its an “OK” cigar and its a mile away from habanos but its perfect for beginners looking for a great looking cigar with class which does not have the full body cigar bite. It’s also a nice cigar to take to a party to show off. I would smoke them once in a while and mostly offer them to my guests. Will not buy a box anymore.

  1. -seems a bit tame for us ‘full bodied/rich’ cigar seeking smokers.

-one thing, Alex, you said it was small. How long was it? That is, what was it’s overall length and how long did it take to smoke it?

  2. That sounds similar to my experience with this line. I had the Grand Master, which is a 5.5 x 52 parejo. It is a nice looking cigar, I noted some stretching on the wrapper, but it had a nice draw and a good flavor profile, though not complex, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing in my opinion.

What turned me off to this cigar is the price. In the US, these retail for $13-15 or more depending on tobacco taxes in different states. Quite frankly, this cigar was not worth that kind of money, there are much better cigars to be had for half that price.

  3. Hello to Alex and Joe!

It’s been sometime since I was last here. I’ve got a few questions as I re-read this article.

    1) For Alex: What roughly was the size of the chubby you smoked? I’m guessing only four inches or so?

(Sometimes a small smoke has the advantage of being a quick, rich smoke. (As if there ever really is such a thing as a ‘quick’ smoke for a cigar–one of the worst things in the world to me, is to smoke a cigar quickly! When I say ‘quick smoke’ I mean it’s over in forty-five minutes or *GASP!* less. That would be a ‘quick’ smoke for me–I’m used to Robustos as the smallest size I’d ever smoke, gauge-wise also. Usually, an hour-and-a-half smoke is par for the course.)

    2) Did you get your cigar in Toronto, Joe (and Alex too)? Where does one get a Zino cigar in Toronto? I don’t think I’ve ever been in a store that sells Zino’s?

(…Or, most likely, because you mention that they are mild, I’ve simply never took notice–I always prefer full bodied/rich tasting smokes…unless I have a cold, in which case, I’ll smoke a non-cuban.)

P.S. I did try a Perfecto* in two other brands this year. One was the Macanudo Maduro Diplomat. It is 4 1/2″ x 60 and the other was the Punch Champion with the same measurements. With a huge ring size of 60 in it’s middle, I just had to try a smoke of each. I always hear that the Perfecto was, in it’s ‘hey day’, way back in the 40’s and 50’s. I picture someone like W.C. Fields in spats, a starched white shirt, and a top hat holding a perfecto and sprouting insults in a devil-may-care fashion. Or, Groucho Marx wriggling his bushy eyebrows above his round spectacles and making his eyes roll about whilst smoking one as he does his comedy routine. It seems to me that the Punch brand, and especially the Macanudo brand, are mild enough for beginners (the Punch Punch excepted and any other Punch cigars made in Cuba). So, why would I smoke them, you wonder? That’s easy enough to answer. Because of the Diplomat and Champion’s large ring gauge! You know, there is a moment in the middle of smoking these cigars when it sort of becomes a big, beautiful, beefy affair! Try it one day and let me know if you agree, or not.

*Perfectos have a bulge in the middle and taper evenly as they move out to each end.

  4. Hello to you as well Frankie. I do not live in Toronto, I actually live in California, but I stumbled onto this site after watching the videos Alex has posted on youtube. As far as getting a Zino Platinum Scepter, the best I can do is refer you to a website where I purchase cigars from. If you follow this link, it will take you to the page for the Zino Platinum. Link!

  5. -”A Conneticut shade grown Ecuadorian wrapper covers a mix of Peruvian and Dominican fillers that are aged over four years.”

-”As soon as you light up a Platinum Scepter a burst of flavor explodes on the palate.”

    Hello Joe!

That was a great link; the info certainly helped a lot. Now I know more about the Zino Platinum Scepter.

I didn’t know the cigar contained Peruvian tobacco in it’s filler. Heck, I had no idea Peru grew cigar tobacco! Well, you learn something new everyday.

I’ll hunt around for the Zino brand here in Toronto. I’m quite sure I’ll find someone who carries it, and then, I’ll look into getting one of each of The Stout, Grand Master, and Chubby. And then there will be only one thing left to do! *Rubs hands together in anticipation of a mild, Dominican smoke*

“Thanks a bunch!”, my fellow BOTL*.

  6. wonderful site, good stuff

  7. IMO a cigar humidifier is neccessary for any regular cigar smoker out there. Nothing keeps that ‘Store Fresh’ taste for a cigar like a humidifier. I have a travel humidifier in my car at all times. Thanks for the wonderful post.

  8. Transferred from Chicago to work in New York – but arranged to live in Hoboken to save some money – called empiregroup.com and got it done fast.

  9. I was very pleased to see this blog. I wanted to thank you for this well written post and I have you bookmarked to check out new stuff you write.

  10. By the way…does anyone know WHERE in Toronto I can purchase any of the Zino Platinum Scepter cigars? After a year and a half, I’ve never really actually looked (!) I’m going to Montreal this weekend and I”ll probably find some there in one of my favourite stores downtown but it’s nice to check here first.

  11. I just thought i’d post and let you know your blogs theme is not working properly on the K-meleon browser. Anyhow nice blog…

  12. Does anyone else think that the baseball season is way too long? Do we really need 180 games to figure out that the Yankees and Red Socks are the best teams? No individual game serves a purpose. Doesn’t really matter to the players if they win it or lose it.

  13. Completely I share your opinion. In it something is also to me this idea is pleasant, I completely with you agree.

  14. Thanks for sharing, excellent blog and articles

I know that you have many demands on your own schedule and so the fact that you actually took equally as much time just like you did to steer people like us via this article is also highly valued.

  18. It’s still nice to see this article going! I finally went down to Miami in February 2011 and bought a Zino Platinum Chubby at Aventura Mall (half an hour north of Miami) while I was wandering around. It’s in a tube so I’m looking forward to smoking it sometime this summer. Sometimes a guy needs a morning smoke~

  19. Hi there! Remarkable website contents, I am just a bit amazed cause there isn’t any spam user feedback on your site as there is on most websites on the web today, so you’ve done a good job of managing your website. Regardless, keep making great posts on your blog and I’ll keep visiting :) Bless you, Hunter.
