Sad Day For Mr. Bolivar and Mr. Cohiba
Yesterday while smoking a cigar on the third floor with my buddy I had a couple of extra cigars, a Cohiba Robusto and a Bolivar Royal Corona in a Xikar 5 cigar case. I had the case on the stair case rail with my lighter and while turning back I hit the cigar case and it dropped all the way down to the second floor. I looked down and said to my buddy its OK, we might have a cracked wrapper here. He went down the stairs and grabbed the case. When back up we opened the cigar case and we were both shocked to see both cigars exploded from inside. We both went silent for a few seconds in disbelief and shock on how a couple of wonderful cigars were ruined in a split second when they could have been smoked, bringing an hour of joy each. I had to take a picture to show you how delicate cigars are and how we should always be really careful when carrying cigars in the cases where they are loosely moving.

O.M.G.! >:O YAGH! Poor little guys–they look like they’ve been playing hockey…during the playoffs! This reminds me of a similar situation where one of my friends went to Cuba and brought back a dozen Monte cristo Robusto LE 2006’s…in his cargo pants pockets! After having a good cry (yes, some grown men do actually shed a tear or two when moved by a monumental tragedy like this), I told off my “cigar mule” as to the stupendous error committed–he said that he had two boxes of cigars in his luggage and didn’t want to declare any extra cigars for fear of paying extra duty/taxes!!! I still have them but I don’t know if I can smoke them–the wrappers are all peeling off and have an assorted collection of small tears and large rips in them. And then, some wrappers are missing pieces as large as the size of a Loonie coin! On half of them, I can see the darker binder leaves beneath where the wrapper has split and believe me, they don’t look appealing at all for a relaxing, after dinner smoke. I think I’ll smoke them ONLY IF they are the last cigars on earth…maybe. Besides, I have over 300 other cigars in my humidors. (Besides, I suspect these Limited Edition 2006’s are all counterfeits anyways.)
P.S. Incidentally, the Cohiba Robusto is one of my most favourite cigars to smoke! In my humble opinion, it pairs well with just a wee dram of Lagavulin single malted Scotch. The smokey tang/taste of the scotch is a perfect marry to the power of the cigar’s rich body. I truly do commiserate with you for your loss!
Don’t worry, there are metric tonnes of Bolivar Royal Coronas and Cohiba Robustos still to be had! It’s not the very end of the world, this too, will pass. So smoke on, Brother Of The Leaf, smoke on.
Great post. Lagavulin is my favorate single malt with any cigar. Second favorate is Bowmore 18.
Bowmore 18, eh? Hmm…I’ve heard of it but I’ve never tried it. I’ll have to give it a shot! (Not a ’shot’ but ‘two fingers’ at least.)
So…seeing as we’re having this discussion about two of my most favourite things in this world, I hope you won’t mind me asking but…
1) What’s so great about it? That is, what are the distinguishing features from your humble point of view, that makes it your second most favourite of all scotches? And…
2) What cigar might you suggest that I pair this scotch up with? What works for you? Taking into account of course, that every Cigar & Scotch Connoisseur’s taste is (personally) varied and very subjective.
Thanks; pleased to meet you, Alex.
Alex,
I own one of those crush proof cigar cases. They work really well and have dropped it, causing no damage to the cigars within. I know the finger cases look wonderful, and are small enough to carry in a pocket but maybe consider this for times you may want to carry 5 cigars safely.
